A resting HR of 60–70 BPM is associated with the lowest cardiovascular risk in population studies.
A landmark study (European Heart Journal, 2013) of 3 million people found that each 10 BPM increase in resting heart rate above 60 was associated with a 9% higher risk of all-cause mortality. Regular aerobic training is the most effective non-pharmacological way to reduce RHR.
To accurately measure resting HR: measure first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, after at least 5 minutes of complete rest. Take the measurement 3 days in a row and average the results.
