The average BMI for US men is 29.4, placing the average man in the Overweight category (CDC NHANES 2017–2020). The healthy range of 18.5–24.9 applies regardless of sex.

BMI uses the same formula for men — height and weight only — but men tend to carry more lean muscle mass, meaning a man with BMI 27 may have less body fat than a woman at the same BMI.
For men, waist circumference is a stronger predictor of metabolic risk than BMI alone. Men with waist over 40 inches (102 cm) face elevated cardiovascular and diabetes risk independent of BMI.
