Social Security Disability Guide
SSDI pays workers who have contributed to Social Security and can no longer work due to a qualifying medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. The benefit amount equals your full retirement benefit — there is no reduction for claiming early. In 2025, the average SSDI payment is $1,580/month. To qualify, you typically need 40 work credits (10 years of work), with 20 earned in the last 10 years. SSI is separate — it's need-based and covers people with limited work history.
